Our February member spotlight is Charity Ewald from Montana
I have been enamored with vintage warbirds since I was a child when I would sneak out of bed to watch old reruns of Baa Baa Black Sheep. A few years ago, I was following the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) and the saga of “That’s All, Brother” when I learned about the D-Day Squadron. Not long after, I came across a news article about the restoration project of Miss Montana at the Museum of Mountain Flying. I was incredibly excited that there was an airplane that was going to represent my state in this historic flyover in Normandy. Later that year, they put out a call for volunteers. I have no mechanical skills, however, I made the three and a half hour drive several times to do what I could. Those were messy, dirty days that were some of the best times.
I currently work for a healthcare software company, yet I always dream of airplanes. I’ve become a member of the Museum of Mountain Flying and met some of the nicest people through my volunteering there. I want to learn more about these aircraft and get my hands dirty keeping them flying.
One thing I love about C-47’s and DC-3’s - these aircraft are still relevant. Not only are they beautiful to look at, but these airplanes are hard at work. Several times in the last few years, volunteers and their planes have come to the rescue of people affected by natural disasters. 80 years old and still going strong; the history is alive around us.
